Thematic Scorecard: Mining companies in the ESG theme

Thematic Scorecard: Mining companies in the ESG theme

The future of the mining industry will be shaped by a range of disruptive themes, with ESG being one of the themes that will have a significant impact on mining companies. Extraction and primary processing of metals and minerals are responsible for 26% of global carbon emissions. By nature, mining depletes natural resources and has a significant impact on surrounding ecosystems. However, metals and minerals will play an important role in the global transition to a greener future. Companies must work to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reduce their environmental impact, and mitigate risks. Comprehensive strategies for positive environmental management target energy consumed, equipment used, and the systems in place for impact mitigation. Mining is also extremely dangerous, and though death and injury rates have declined, further improvements can come from reminding workers of the basics and augmenting operations with technology that improves safety. Companies must also use […]

Mercury use by Uganda’s small-scale gold miners

New programme seeks to make small-scale gold mining safer, cleaner and more profitable Kampala, Uganda | RONALD MUSOKE | A new five year project is seeking to eliminate mercury use among Uganda’s artisanal and small scale miners. The project which is targeting 4,500 artisanal miners working in 11 mines around the country is aimed at reducing the use of mercury by 15 tonnes over the next five years. It also intends to support the formalization of the artisanal gold mining sector and increase access to finance. It is hoped that these interventions will eventually lead to the adoption of mercury-free technologies and allow access to more responsible and traceable gold supply chains in Uganda. A virtual inaugural inception workshop on Nov. 23 brought together Ugandan mining governance authorities and the technical services of the mining administration to introduce the key themes and priorities of the project. “Artisanal gold mining […]

The difference between having an effective strategy and lacking on can be life and death. Recently an inquest investigated the death of Olivier Bruneau, a worker in Ottawa who was killed by an ice fall. While the death was ruled an accident, Bruneau’s family and his fellow co-workers believe his death could have been prevented. Should we link pay to ESG measures?

Should we link pay to ESG measures?

According to this report by The Conference Board, in collaboration with Semler Brossy and ESGAUGE, the vast majority (73% in 2021) of companies in the S&P 500 are “now tying executive compensation to some form of ESG performance.” To be sure, some companies have long tied executive comp to particular ESG measures, such as diversity, customer satisfaction, employee and product safety and anticorruption programs. That has now expanded to a wider use of various ESG metrics, which the report attributes to a new intensified focus on ESG “driven by investors, employees, consumers, business partners, ESG rating agencies, and regulators,” together with “the shift to a multi-stakeholder form of capitalism.” The expanded use of ESG measures in executive compensation offers the obvious benefit of incentivizing and rewarding behaviors needed to achieve goals that so many stakeholders view as critical. At the same time, however, inclusion creates a number of risks […]
